Need advice on organic and/or evo-friendly pest control for vegetable garden? I've got a nice vegetable garden, but grasshoppers and other insects are going after my broccoli plants something fierce. I'd rather not use chemical insecticides to stop them. Does anyone have any advice on how to protect my plants without resorting to Raid? I've heard of making solutions with dish soap and other household items; that's the sort of stuff I'm looking for.
Are june bug larvae bad for a vegetable garden? I have a small plot of land that I let go fallow for a season or two, and now, while tilling the soil, I've discovered a major infestation of june bug larvae. Will they hurt my plants? I removed all that I could see by hand, but I'm sure I missed some. If they are harmful, how can I keep them out of my organic garden? Thanks. And any other tips on organic vegetable gardening/pest control are appreciated. I'm a little rusty.

Gardening info needed...? Okay so I'd like to know about materials for gardening and pest control. Please provide info about the advantages of both conventional and organic pest control and fertilization. What are the types of ingredients found in products used in conventional and organic gardening. Compare the two. Identify any poisons and harmful substances in each.
What exactly is an organic garden? I have a small garden in my back yard. I have a compost pile that I use in the garden. I don't use chemicals mostly because I don't have much of a pest problem and the pests I do have are easily controlled without it. So does that make organic or is there something more?
non chemical/non lethal pest control? In commercial growing, is there such a thing as alternative or non-chemical pest control? I would like to know if in all commercial growing (fruit & vegetables, plant nurseries, garden centre stock, ornamental trees, etc) the crops are routinely sprayed with pesticides/insecticides/and other chemicals or poisons to kill pests. I hear sometimes of "organic" control, but I assume that means the toxins used are not harmful to OTHER animals, rather than non-lethal at all. I know in gardens and such, predators are encouraged, but I can't imagine this would be practical or foolproof in large scale commercial enterprises, and I expect that in all these places, horticulturists regularly lay down chemicals or spray lethal substances on crops? I would like to hear if there are alternative practises.
Natural pest control for vegetables? I'm in the middle of preparing a new garden and am planning on growing broccoli and onions to start off with. Only thing is that I'm not keen on using pesticides and want to keep the garden as organic as possible. What are some good ways such as natural sprays or even companion planting that will help keep pests away from broccoli and onions?

I would like to hear if there are alternative practises. what i am interested in are methods that do not kill anything, even the intended target: ie they repel them or "clean" the surface. included in this would be ways of farming and growing which made insect/pest accessibility scarcer such as growing under nets or in greenhouses, though I do not know the effectiveness of this. i am also intrigued by the fact that i, and others i know, grow vegetables to eat, yet use no pesticides. why do commercial growers need to do so? are the pesticides introduced on as "as and when" basis, or routinely?
What kind of bug spray should I use for my organic garden? I don’t want to use any harmful pesticides, especially since I’m going to be eating what I grow in my garden. I hear about people making their own organic insect control sprays, but I’m not sure if I have the time for that. Are there any organic insect killers that I can just buy? After some searching, I came across this Safer Brand EndAll: http://www.saferbrand.com/store/garden-care/5102. Has anyone tried this? It targets a variety of pests and kills them at all stages of the life cycle.
New gardener looking for advice, can you help? I'm starting a vegetable garden and I have a few questions: How do I make compost for my garden using things from my kitchen? What are some good veggies/fruits for a beginning gardener to grow? What are some organic pest control methods?
Anyone have any vegetable garden tips? So, my vegetable garden is finally dying because it's getting colder. I feel kind of sad because I didn't utilize it much. A lot of good crops went bad and were wasted. Also, I had a hard time keeping pests away and preventing my squash plants from rotting. Anyone have any tips to share that I can keep in mind for next year as far as utilization and pest/mildew control while keeping everything organic?
What can I do about my gardening difficulties? what r some organic pest controls that I can use for fruits and vegetables; that I can easily make myself? And what's the best wire to use to put around my plants, so I can protect them from animals?
If I applied Amdro Firestrike to my lawn in the spring, how long do I have to wait to put a garden in? I applied Firestrike as well as a 2,4D weed and feed in April. From what I understand the herbicide dissipates rather quickly, but I'm not sure how long I need to wait after the application of Firestrike to plow up for a garden. To head off any of these comments at the pass, I have sworn off the weed and feed products as well as other non-organic weed and pest control. I just want to know how long I have to wait before I can put veggies in the ground and not harm my family. Thanks!
Organic pestdicide? What is the best organic pesticide to use in my garden. I have several kinds of bugs causing damage. I have Grasshoppers eating my basil and cutter caterpillars eating my chives. Is their one kind of pest control for both?

In CA when is it optimal time to plant corn in my backyard garden? I've never had a garden before. I'd like your comments on enriching the soil (fertilizers) and what pest controls (insects) I might be concerned about from both an organic perspective and an in-organic one too! Thanks. I live in south Orange County in Southern California. The temperatures probably won't get much colder than say 40 degree. Today it was around 78 degrees - not terribly warm or hot but nice, but I do experience the fog that usually rolls in later in the day and the skies don't get sunny until a bit before noon. I live about 5 miles from the ocean and the soil is a sandy clay. Great for the three varieties of oranges, three varieties of mandarin oranges and one santa clara plum tree I now have.
Is organic farming sustainable? Insects and fungus continues on the increase. I never have used chemical pesticides or herbicides. The situation gets worse every year. 30 years ago I could plant a nice big garden and the pests were insignificant, and the weeds were manageable. Today insects totally inundate my garden, and weeds are completely out of control. I have weeds that look like potato plants, and weed that look like carrots, etc. I clean them out and do not let them seed, but they continue to get worse every year. Is organic farming a dead end road. @ Ranger_c Could you email me. I would like to discuss your answer.
Tomato Gardening Help? I have fruit set on my early girl tomato, but the fruit appears to be growing no larger been over 2 weeks and no change in fruit size or color. Is there something I might be doing wrong? A couple weeks ago we had some drastic fluctuations in temp. and pretty heavy rain where the plant was practically drowned. added extra drainage and pruned damaged areas and plant recovered ... however it does have curly leaf and some of the new flowers don't appear to be setting properly but I think that might be from the wild temps. I water 1-2 times per week depending on the temp and fertilize every 14-20 days. Container has two companion marigolds growing with it. While plant is in a container it is not root bound and does continue to put new growth and flowers on every day. Soil mixture of loamy peat, potting soil with perlite and moisture control miracle grow mix. I use an organic spray to control pests and powdery mildew gets a fine mist every 30 days or so *mum said to use the one for roses and vegetables.*
