How do Alvin and the Chipmunks relate to U.S. history?

i need to know how Alvin and the Chipmunks relate to U.S. history, but i need something more than - They were created a long time ago. Be a little more detailed please i have to know this for my history class

3. They made us laugh with their silly voices singing Christmas Carols. It wasn't all that long ago and they have NO true importance in American History other than their entertainment value. I think you're putting us on. How are we supposed to be detailed about History vis a vis cartoon characters?
