All sounds coming from my computer speakers sound like Alvin and the chipmunks. How can I fix this?

I'm using windows XP professional, and I believe my sound software is something like Realtek AC97. The more specific you are, the better, because I have minimal computer skills. Help would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to talk it over via yahoo messenger if necessary. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP :]

1. did it just start doing this? bad memory maybe?
2. if sound is coming out of the speaker, then your audio driver must be fine. Two things to consider though. (1) equalizer setting of your wave output. You may have accidentally set your bass spectrum too low. (2) or, if you have high end speaker, your woofer or subwoofers are busted and/or the low pass filters inside the speakers are busted.
