What are the laws regarding pest control in England?

I am considering setting up a pest control business to generate a bit of money. No pesticides or anything like that, it would primarily be getting rid of pigeons and rats from industrial and residential properties using traps and an air rifle. I am curious about whether or not I will require some kind of trading licence or anything? Any help will be greatly apreciated.

  1. No - firstly you do not require a trading licence but you would require insurance that covers the use of an air weapon (contact W F Fountain Insurance Brokers for pest related cover). There are still several laws that cover your works including the Pests Act 1954, Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (read! - very important for bird control) and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. I would also doubt that you would be able to control a rodent infestation using an air rifle and trap as your sole weapon so i would consider attending a training course with respects to using pesticides to keep you one step in front of your Competition. Pigeons are generally straight forward and if you are a good shot and of a professional nature i would recommend that you offer your services as a sub-contractor to other bird control companies (less money but more work!).
