What is the pest DIY home pest control treatment?

I have had contracts with 2 highly regarded pest control companies. The first just wasn't working at all and the guy would be here about 5 minutes for a 3 month treatment. My contract is now up with the 2nd company and it seems as though I have to call now to get my every 2 month service, which also didn't last 2 months. What is the best product I can buy to use around the perimeter of my home every month or whatever? I used to do it myself before hiring these companies, applying 3 feet up and out as they do, but I know there are newer products out there and want the best. I only apply to the outside of my house, don't like the stuff inside, and that has always worked just fine. Thanks!

1. I got advice from one of the guys I work with. He said spectriside granules. Buy a bag and pour it into a spreader, then dampen the granules if the ground isn't wet. It worked great for me.
2. What are you trying to control? For the most part, and very much depending on your location if you are applying pesticides to the outside of your house all you are really doing is poisoning ground-water and adding persistent toxins to the soil. Try doing nothing for a while and see if you really need this 'service'. Again, it would be helpful to know if you are trying to control some special case or just everything in general.
