Why are chipmunks friendlier then squirrels?

At Balboa Park here in San Diego the chipmunks will come up to up and if you sit down on the ground they'll crawl all over you, but the squirrels will only come up to you if you have food grab it and run.

1. I guess they've just had better experiences with people. I raised a baby squirrel for about six months, and he would crawl all over me. Chipmunks have never allowed me to get even close. But also, I haven't raised one.
2. They are different species, so it is natural that they would have different responses to the same stimulus.
