eChipmunks

Is there any risk to have Squirrels and Chipmunks everywhere?

Whenever i look outside, there are squirrels and chipmunks running around all day. It's probably because my neighbors feed them corn and nuts every day lol... I live in an apartment complex. But anyways, if these rodents were mice or big rats, people would be grossed out. But since their fur is brown and/or speckled instead of ratty or mousy grey, they're considered "good" rodents . But, will they carry diseases or germs or destroy the buildings or anything like that?

  1. i live in the country,,,chipmunks a VERY destructive,,the will chew up most every thing to make a nest,,,this summer 19 of them have passed away from lead poison
  2. No, squirrels and chipmunks do not carry diseases. They are perfectly safe and will not cause any health risk.
  3. Rabies of course. If they are infested with ticks then possible tick borne illnesses. Fleas from them can carry Hanta virus......if you live in the US Southwest. Another US Southwest problem is bubonic plague. The animals themselves can get into buildings and cause much destruction. A friend had one get into her car and her quote, "It looked like a bomb went off inside the car."
  4. Squirrels and chipmunks pose very little health risk. Rabies in squirrels and chipmunks is possible but uncommon, the cdc doesn't even consider them a rabies risk. And as far as the ticks go, u need to worry about getting bitten by a tick from a squirrel or a chipmunk about as much as u do from ur dog or cat (that is if they go outside). Neither of the above listed "heath risks" are anything to be worried about. I will say however she is right about the potential property damage. they will find a way into any protected nook and cranny like a garage, chimney, lawn mower, ect. anything u don't use on a regular basis is up for grabs for them to make a nest with or in.
