How do you make a song "Chipmunk" without affecting the instruments?

i used audacity to make the pitch higher on my songs to make them "Chipmunk" but it makes the instruments sound rubbish :( is there anyway to single out the voice and change that, without affecting the instruments?

1. It has to be done in the recording stage once the song has been mixed, you can't seperate them anymore
2. The GoldWave editing software should be able to do that.
