Is organic farming sustainable?

Insects and fungus continues on the increase. I never have used chemical pesticides or herbicides. The situation gets worse every year. 30 years ago I could plant a nice big garden and the pests were insignificant, and the weeds were manageable. Today insects totally inundate my garden, and weeds are completely out of control. I have weeds that look like potato plants, and weed that look like carrots, etc. I clean them out and do not let them seed, but they continue to get worse every year. Is organic farming a dead end road. @ Ranger_c Could you email me. I would like to discuss your answer.

  1. I keep a small garden growing tomatoes, lettuce, radish, potatoes and beetroot and haven't had a problem with pests or weeds. I suggest you look into the type of soil you are using for cultivation, perhaps relaying would be suitable. A simple mesh will keep out the creepy crawlies.
  2. Almost all scientist that are credible in agriculture say that half of the worlds population will starve if the world converted to organic farming. This upsets the backyard organic gardener where the labor intensive methods of organic gardening are not expected to provide food for a whole year for a family, let alone enough to contribute to the needs of the population of the world where most people live in big cities. But the truth is, it is impossible to organically raise enough food for the worlds population. In the past, the use of commercial pesticides by your neighbors kept the pest in check. Once the us of pesticides is stopped, the pest breed to maximum carrying capacity of the surrounding environment and spread to your garden. It is impossible to stop the invasion of pest from other areas. .
