what kind of flea/tick/heartworm control should I use?
I have a 6month old German Shepard mix and want to know other peoples opinions about what kind of products they use for their dogs (or cats) to control pests? Also would like to know which ones to stay away from? She will be a mostly inside dog and we are moving into a new housing addition that is a little bit out of town. thanks

- I love K9 Advantix!!!!!!!!
- Advantix for flea/tick control and Heartgard for heartworm prevention. Both are extremely safe.
- My chihuahua uses Revolution. It costs about $80 for 7 month supply. Rosa has never had a flea, tick or heartworm and she is 5 and 1/2 . They have different packages that go by weight. It is by prescription only. I don't like the over the counter products because some have cost sickness/death
- frontline and advantage are both good. Advantix is good, but do not use it if you have cats in the home.. its very toxic to them! These are around $10 or so per tube (monthly treatment) but they WORK If this is a little out of your range price, you can get the frontline spray instead of the tubes. There is also revolution, which also has a HW preventative in it too, as well as controls ear mites and several other things. You would have to get this from your vet since it is a HW preventative. Stay away from the cheap ones you can get at the store, like the biospot, hartz, etc. Many of them do not work. They have been known to cause reactions in many pets. Adams products are great too. Ive used the adams spray before when I couldnt afford to treat everyone with frontline or advantage. I use hartguard for HW control. Interceptor is another good one. Do not order HW meds from ebay, or thru an over-seas site. Some place like 1-800 pet meds is ok. Many over seas places do not have quality control, and sometimes the products sit on the dock for weeks out in the heat. Its best to get HW meds direct thru your vet. that way you can proove that your pet is kept current month to month, and tested yearly. Should your dog test HW positive, the company that makes the brand of meds youve been getting may cover teh costs of treating your dog.
- Revolution
- I use Revolution. It kills fleas, ticks, heartworms, ear mites all with one topical application. You need a prescription but you don't have to buy from your vet. I get mine off the Internet and I only pay $100 for 12 treatments. That's for the whole year, less than $10 per dose.
- I prefer Frontline. It works yet isn't as strong as some of the newer ones. Some products can actually cause a reaction on pets, so it is best to use the weakest one that will do the job.
