How do I keep bugs off of my porch?

Well summer is here and here come the bugs, its like hundreds show up out of nowhere in a matter of days, all flocking to my porch. We live in KY, so the front porch is a major part of our life, its our main area for entertaining guests. I really don't want to hire a pest control company because I'm strapped for cash like everyone else at this time, so I'm wondering what products I can use myself to fix this problem. I must also emphasize the fact that we have a lot of pets, so it must be something that won't harm them. Thanks for any suggestions. About the Borax powder...we have some stray cats that come around also when we're not here so I couldn't make sure that they wouldn't eat it, would they be attracted to its smell or anything?

1. citronella candles/torches, yard foggers, bug zapper... that's about all i can think of.
2. Borax powder it will help for the crawlers you can get it at your local nursery it kills fleas on pets so its ok you just want to make sure they dont eat it. You outline the patio in the powder it will help .
